Water Rapids Safety Concerns
Recently, four people were killed at Thunder River Rapids in Dreamworld, a theme park in Queensland, Australia. It is still uncertain how two people were thrown from the ride and two others were pinned underneath as Australian authorities continue to investigate.
As a result of this incident, Walt Disney World and other theme parks have closed their similar river rides pending the result of the investigation in Australia. No incidents of a similar nature have occurred at Disney, however, authorities want to be sure if an unknown hazard is present in Florida and California they want to correct it before a similar tragedy happens again.
Disney World, Islands of Adventure in Universal Studios, and the Six Flags parks all have rides relatively identical to the Australian version. I will post more information as it becomes available.
Tourist safety is of utmost importance to all the parks and they all want to err on the side of caution for the time being.

Hurricane Matthew
If you are planning to come to Florida this week chances you are already here so you know the warnings about Hurricane Matthew. If you are sketchy on the updates I can give them to you now:
The southeastern coast of Florida is under hurricane watch from 5:41 PM, October 4th through 5:41 PM October 7th. The hurricane is expected to skirt the eastern shore and follow the coastline up past New England possibly never making landfall in the United States. Central Florida expects peak wind forecasts of about 50-65 MPH with gusts to 80 MPH. High winds and rain will accompany the storm which may bring damage to buildings and property. The window for tropical storm force activity is Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon. Hurricane Matthew is presently situated in the strait between Haiti and Cuba off the coast of Guantanamo Bay.
Those who are here for theme parks and hotels will received emergency preparedness instructions from their hotels. The parks will advise them of their status throughout the week and local broadcasts will keep you updated through the duration of the hurricane.
Check with your airlines and any reservations you may have made for the week. Most accommodations will give credits for unused hotel rooms and attraction tickets. We want you to come back if you can't come this week. I'll post local updates as they become relevant.Try not to worry. We're used to it.

Golf at Walt Disney World
When you visit Central Florida and you are on par for running the circuit of theme parks remember that there are world class golf courses here as well. For example, the Walt Disney World complex plays host to four golf courses and one miniature gold course. Here we'll take a look at those.
First there is the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course located in the Disney Springs Resort Area. Having hosted the PGA, LPGA, and USGA golf tours, it is a well established landmark and well-known in the golf community. Although this golf course is of professional caliber, it plays host to teenagers and adults nicely. The course is available to all so if you're not too proud of your handicap or are a scratch golfer, this course is for everybody.
Like most golf courses there is a dress code. The fairways and holes are immaculately maintained and all conceivable amenities are available. Tee times can be made at (407) WDW-GOLF (939-4653).
If you travel from Disney Springs to the Magic Kingdom there are three equally great golf courses located near the grounds of the Grand Floridian Hotel. The Disney Magnolia Golf Course has everything a golfer could want. So does the Disney palm Golf Course and the Disney Oak Trail Golf Course. These courses, while good for the experienced golfer or the pro, are also geared for family members. In fact, the Disney Oak Trail Golf Course is specially welcoming to the younger novices and preschoolers
All the courses have par courses and golf carts complete with GPS. Coolers are not allowed but each cart has a cooler and they can be stocked with ice, beer, cold drinks, or whatever you want. Pairing is standard as they like to send groups of four but more or less can be accommodated, especially if the group is a family.
Disney has thought of everything when it comes to their guests including golfers. Not everybody goes to the parks every day and when you're on vacation, the idea is to relax and do what you want to do. This is Florida. We're ready for you.

Wet n Wild Scheduled to Close - 2016
Wet n' Wild water park was opened in March, 1977, by George Millay, the creator of Sea World. At the time it was heralded as the first water park in America. In the late 1990's he sold off his share of the park and it was purchased by the Universal Studios Group. It has run steadily since it opened and has been a great success for many years.
In recent years, Universal Studios, Orlando has added Cabana Bay to it's three other hotels and now has plans to open a water park in 2017 to be called Volcano Bay. It will close Wet n' Wild on 30 December, 2016. Speculation is that the new park will open simultaneously, This will create another distinct park collocated on Universal Studios Orlando main property. The reason is to create little reason for visitors to leave the complex through the course of a stay. It will encourage visitors to remain on park. Vacation packages and other incentives will sweeten the deal for traveling families.
The opening of the new water park is expected to put Universal Studios on par with nearby Sea World and Walt Disney World which each have water parks of their own.

Fun Spot Attractions - Orlando & Kissimmee
A good vacation day aside from all the mega theme parks is Fun Spot, a smaller amusement park with two locations: International Drive across the highway from Universal Studios or on US Hwy 192 in Kissimmee. For $39.95 you can ride all the rides all day from 10:00 AM until midnight. Since parking and entrance is free you can spend some time, go somewhere for lunch or dinner. and return to enjoy yourself until the park closes.
Fun Spot is more like a permanent county fair. It has multiple roller coasters and midway rides. It also has several go kart courses that all ages can enjoy. You'll notice right away that the park is clean - actually spotless- and the staff is very friendly and professional. They have several concession stands that have great park style food and the prices aren't too extreme.

The only ride that isn't included in the general pass is the Sky Coaster which is a two hundred fifty drop from the top of the structure you see above. If you get the all day arm band it costs $25.00 each but if you come to the park just for the Coaster they charge $40.00. My kids went on it and had a great experience. I got some great shots of them flying through the air but it's not something I'm interested in.
This place is fun and affordable. They have a nice family atmosphere there and the staff is nice to talk to. We enjoyed it there and look forward to going back soon. Visit their website for pricing and deals. You can save a few dollars by purchasing your tickets online and printing them before arriving.

Rain Forest Cafe Downtown Disney
The Rain Forest Cafe in Downtown Disney is always a good place to go and have lunch or dinner while enjoying some of the best dining atmosphere you can imagine.
Located at the far east end of Downtown Disney in Orlando, Rain Forest appears in the form of a volcano that towers over the rest of the complex. As you enter you are met with gorillas, giraffes, elephants, and monkeys, all animatronic, who come to life every 12 minutes as a rain storm moves through the restaurant and gives the kids a thrill. Seating is on a waiting list but you can make reservations online as long as you do it 24-48 hours in advance.
The menu is varied with a great selection of burgers and sandwiches, seafood, steak, or combo plates, along with delicious pasta dishes. My favorite is the jambalaya, which is well-prepared and perfect every time. My kids enjoy the pasta and burgers. I've only had the seafood there once and I cant remember what it was but I do remember it was good. There is a full service bar you can sit and enjoy, and you are welcome to walk around taking pictures while you wait.
Pricing is a little on the high side. If you stick to lunch items you can eat for about $65-$75 for a family of four. Dinner for four costs us between $95 and $100 without appetizer or dessert so it's a little more than the average family usually spends but if you only come to Orlando occasionally it is worth the experience. They do have a kids menu which has a good variety of choices.
Service is always fantastic and the wait staff is hospitable and efficient. It's always a positive experience for us and I think you'll enjoy it. I give the place an "A" for service, cleanliness, atmosphere, and food quality. The only detractor is the high prices. They do honor the Disney Dining Plan and every now and then they have specials but not often. You are, however, guaranteed a fun dining experience so give it a try when you come down and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Sea World Orlando - Events
This year at Sea World has a lot planned. In addition to all the park regular attractions Viva La Musica was a big success of Latin food, music, and culture. Coming up is Summer Nights that includes extended summer hours, night time shows, featuring Shamu Rocks, Clyde and Seamore, and roller casters under the stars.
In September, Jack Hanna, the world-renowned zoologist and Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo, will host Jack Hanna Weekend where the whole family can get up close and personal with Jack, share his stories and wildlife knowledge, while learning about animals and the environment.
In October Sea World will host "Halloween Spooktacular" where the kids can join Count Von Count for a character breakfast. They can have fun at Penelope's Party Zone, go trick or treating, and participate in Sesame Street's Countdown to Halloween.
In December the family can enjoy Sea World's Christmas Celebration all month long ending with the always spectacular New Year's Eve Celebration at Sea World. Here you can enjoy one of the best fireworks shows seen anywhere.
Visit the website www.seaworldparks.com/seaworld-orlando. You can view park hours as they change throughout the year, what is happening now, and buy tickets or vacation packages all on the same site. Don't forget to book the pets. Sea World has on-site kennels so nobody has to be left at home. I always suggest visiting and comparing prices and packages with Orbitz, Kayak, Priceline, and the other mainstream vacation sites. Go with names you know. There are scams out there so stick with the established sites. Shop and compare to get the best rates for your family and enjoy your vacation in Central Florida.

Harry Potter Expansion - Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure
Universal Studios Orlando is at it again. For months now there has been a tremendous amount of construction going on in both parks and now they have revealed what many speculated to be an addition to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The area pictured above is inside Universal Studios and will be called "Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley". It will be modeled after London and will have a major ride where visitors ride cars through a labyrinth of passageways populated with dragons and other characters based on Gringott's Wizarding bank from the J.K. Rowling novels.
There will also be shops and eateries like on the Islands of Adventure side and other novelties not yet revealed. Diagon Alley, located on the site of the old Jaws Ride, will be connected to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure by the "Hogwarts Express" train ride.
There has been so much interest and speculation about the expansion, The folks at Universal and Warner Bros. decided to release the proposed expansion to the public to boost interest in the parks. The entire project is set to open sometime in 2014. Exact date to be announced sometime in the future.
Since the Harry Potter project will span both parks, it's likely visitors will need a 2-Park Pass to see the whole thing but it will be well worth it. Tickets and packages can be purchased on Universal Studios Orlando website. Shop around and see what kind of deals you can secure from other travel sites as well.
Although an opening date hasn't been firmed up yet, the parks usually open newer attractions prior to the summer months to maximize visitor enjoyment so I'm going to venture a guess it will be ready in April or may 2014. We'll see.

New Attractions at Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure
When I was at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure last weekend I was checking out the construction behind all the panels and trying to see what the newest thing was going to be. Lots of speculation has taken place about what is the large construction where the old Jaws Ride used to be. It's a structure about the same size as the Transformers Ride but when I was at Islands of Adventure I noticed something else.
Behind the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is what looks like the construction of a train station. The idea was first floated last year that an addition to the Harry Potter theme would be at the Jaws site and it looks like there may be a connector to the two parks. Unfortunately, the only way I could see it was from the Dueling Dragons ride and I couldn't possibly get a photo during all that action. When I go back I'm going to see if I can find a way to shoot the construction and let everybody see for themselves.

Transformers - The Ride - Universal Studios Orlando
Coming to Universal Studios, Florida this summer is Transformers The Ride 3-D. This will be the ultimate battle between Megatron and the Decepticons against planet Earth and, you guessed it - it's our job to save the planet! Awesome!
Transformers will be located in this huge warehouse -looking building right across from the Rip Rocket Roller Coaster next to Shrek 3-D. This place is enormous and will likely be similar to Men in Black, an interactive 3-D battle between good and evil. The kids are going to love Transformers and having gone on all the interactive rides, I can say that everybody will enjoy this one.
Book your travel plans to Orlando now and only use trusted travel sites. You can get your best package deals for Universal Studios at www.UniversalOrlando.com. I also suggest Orbitz, Travelocity, Kayak, and the sites for Sea World and Walt Disney World. Shop around and do your homework. Take some notes and save hundreds by researching. Vacations can be expensive if you just "buy" so be careful and enjoy your stay with us.

House of Blues - Orlando
House of Blues, Orlando, is a place where you can see top quality entertainment and enjoy a good meal. Good name acts like Tesla, Cinderella, and Guns and Roses, have played on stage recently. The inside is like an old time saloon, lots of wood, stairs, 2 bars, and a mezzanine with benches for those who don't want to stand at stage side (like me). I believe it only holds about 1500 people and tickets are general admission. The good part is the tickets are reasonable (usually $45-$90/each), but if you don't like standing with the rest of the herd it may not be for you. I prefer seating but I'll stand in a mob to see the artists from 10 feet away.
If you aren't somebody who likes concerts but enjoy good food try Cross Roads at House of Blues, an award winning restaurant championed by world-class chef Aaron Sanchez. He perfected dishes like Voodoo Shrimp and Jambalaya.
They also create a New York Strip steak and they have great burgers. So, visit the House of Blues for whatever reason. They are located at the west end of Downtown Disney right across from Cirque de Soleil. If you're not sure when you get there, look for the Big Top and the Water Tower. You'll be glad you did. Thanks again for reading.

Runaway Country - Melbourne Florida
Runaway Country, a country music festival held at Wickham Park in Melbourne, was an extreme success by any body's standards. Featuring powerhouse bands like Lady Antebellum, Billy Currington, Charlie Daniels Band, and the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd, Runaway Country created a lifetime of memories and fulfilled dreams for thousands.
The 3-day event showcased a variety of vendors, food services, plenty to drink, and one of the coolest crowds I've ever hung out with. The weather was hot with a nice breeze, and we remember why we live in Florida!. Some folks camped for the three days while others just came for a day or even for the act they wanted to see.
I took two of my kids and we stayed all day Saturday. It was like a country music Woodstock. There was zip lining, apparel stores such as Space Coast Harley-Davidson, restaurants like Squid Lips, and, of course, a variety of Bar-B-Q. No shortage of food and no shortage of fun. I haven't gone in past years but I plan to attend next year and maybe explore the camping option.
Pricing for camping is upwards of $250 for full hookup but less expensive for those who don't mind doing the tent thing. General Admission this year was $69 each but kids under 12 were free. Front row seats went for $99 to $279 if you want to go that way but you can see from the photos we chose to sit with the lawn chair crowd. My cell phone didn't take the greatest pictures but the view from the grass was excellent.
I haven't seen the lineup for next year yet but they're already taking reservations. Check out the information as it becomes available at: www.RunawayCountry.com

Sea World Orlando - Bands, Brew, and BBQ
Sea World has a great celebration every year around this time that showcases southern cooking, concerts, and Harley-Davidson's. Bands, Brew, and BBQ is a sharp contrast to parties like Mardi Gras but is a great time by a different flavor.
Featuring outdoor cooking by Tony Roma's, Cecil's Texas Style BBQ, and Sonny's Real Pit BBQ, this party, which runs from February 9th through March 17th, is more like a football tailgate party at the Super Bowl or the Daytona 500. It takes advantage of our Florida weather and southern style cooking to produce a fun, family-oriented good time. While everybody up north is still walking through slush, you can enjoy a combination of good food, music, and Sea World entertainment all in the same day.
The concert series is a great lineup featuring acts like Merle Haggard, the Beach Boys, Third Eye Blind, and Florida's own Darius Rucker. Cheryl Crow performs on March 17th, so the shows are lined up. Come out and see what everyone else is enjoying.
Bands, Brew, and BBQ is included in your annual pass and Pass Holders receive a 10% discount for booking a VIP Package which gives you reserved seating for concerts, dinner, and sampler vouchers.
Always a good time, Bands, Brew, and BBQ is a great time in the sun and under the lights in the heart of the capital of Southern Rock.

Hard Rock Cafe - Orlando
Start with an appetizer. Our family favorite is the nachos but they have much more. We also tend to get burgers (the 10 oz. classic is my best) and sandwiches. If you are really ready for a heavy meal they serve great steaks, seafood, or sophisticated salad choices. So, if you're a vegan, don't feel left out.
I have always give the Hard Rock Cafe an "A+". They rank right up there for me as places to have a super dinner but feel like you're rockin' cool at the same time. Their prices are good for theme parks and the staff is on top of everything. Good job everybody. It was worth every dime!! Love it.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter -Universal Studios Islands of Adventure
Enter Harry Potter's world (left) and join the magical world of wizard's and magic. Visit the shops along the 19th century lane. Enjoy HoneyDuke's confections and Zonko's novelty shop. You could walk up and down the street all day and never get on a ride. Every spot is a photo shoot a the Universal wizards did a masterful job of immersing you in J.K. Rowling's fantasy.
The younger visitors will enjoy the Ride of the HippoGriff and all will thrill to the Harry potter and the Forbidden Journey. This one is inside the castle and will truly rattle your cage! You'll have all the modern effects of Harry Potter right in your face and participate in a virtual Quidditch game.
Something is brewing to the left here. Apparently a stage is being built for shows. Anybody know?
We'll be visiting this Saturday again so stay tuned and I'll see if I can learn more. Don't forget to have some Pumpkin Juice or ButterBeer. Dine at Three Broomsticks, a casual 19th century pub-style eatery that is surprisingly not too expensive. Enjoy Harry Potter. Buy a wand at Ollivander's Magic Shop and be a kid again!

Murray Brothers Caddyshack
Murray Brothers Caddyshack on I-95 at St Augustine is a fun place to visit for a drink or a great meal. Located at the World Golf Village, Caddyshack is a first class bar and grill. Inspired by the iconic 1981 film starring Bill Murray and Chevy Chase, you can see all kinds of golf memoribilia and memoirs from not only the film but of many pro golfers.
The place boasts a full bar and classy dining room. The menu consists of burgers, sandwiches, seafood and steak. Pictured above is my favorite - the seafood platter - flounder, shrimp, clam strips, and crab cake served with fries, cole slaw, or any other side you wish for $16.95. My son loves the burgers and my daughter's favorite is the scallops over rice.
When you visit enjoy a round of golf on world-class fairways or a movie at the Imax theater recently added to the complex. The food is great, pricing is a little above what a normal dining bill is for a family of four but worth it from time to time. The only down side to dining there is an unfriendly wait staff. While they are efficient, any time we dine there they are cold and unwelcoming. I don't know why but we've never been served by a cheerful server.
Food and atmosphere I definitely give an "A" but for customer service I give it a "C". Nonetheless, we always like stopping there when we trek through Florida. If you visit you will like it anyway so you be the judge.

Gaylord Palms Resort - Orlando
Gaylord Palms Resort just off the Osceola Parkway near the gates to Walt Disney World is a world class hotel and convention center with a lot going on this fall. To step into the majestic corridors and gardens of this hotel will amaze even the most critical traveler. The grounds and amenities appeal to the business traveler and families looking for a great place to stay while visiting the parks.
Visitors can choose from Sunset Guest Rooms, Emerald Guest Rooms, or Luxury Suites and Presidential Guest Suites that range in price from $199-$850/night. They also have rates for Florida residents, seniors, AARP, military, and more. Remember to bounce their deals against the travel sites. Believe it or not, you may find a better rate at another site.
I thought it would be good to display the layout of the place. It's that big!
This fall there are several events that will attract folks from up north and Floridians alike. Christmas at Gaylord's is a decorative celebration of the season that includes a 54 foot tall tree and over 2 million lights inside and out of the resort. There are Dream Works characters from films like Shrek, Madagascar, and KungFu Panda which also accompany the character dining events.
The incredibly popular "ICE" premiers from Nov 10-Jan 31. This one appeals especially to Floridians whose kids never get to see ice and snow. They can play on and slide on a 2 million pound ice sculpture. Packages start at $189 per night but you can also attend the event separately starting at 13.99/Child and $22.95 /Adult Visit the website for more information, tickets and reservations:
